Why you are actually not getting enough electrolytes (and how to fix it)

It’s the new year.  So, new year, new you- right? As far as New Year’s resolutions (or as I refer to them- nagging reminders of insufficiency), health and wellness is always at the top oof everyone’s list.  (That and maybe spending time with family.) And why shouldn’t it be?  What’s better than feeling and looking good?  One of the biggest goals for most people is hydration. If you made that goal of drinking more water, are you sure you are getting enough electrolytes? Maybe, maybe not.  Read on to find out.

You could chug water all day long, but that doesn’t mean that you are giving your body what it needs.  Electrolytes are little powerhouses that help your body maintain proper fluid balance, support muscles balance and promote hydration. But, sometimes you need more than just plain water. Here are some signs you may need to up your electrolyte game:

1. You have frequent headaches.  When you lack electrolytes, it can through off the balance of potassium and sodium in your body. This in turn can affect blood flow. To stave off those pesky headaches, try upping your electrolytes.

2. You have muscle cramps. This is another long standing sign showing a lack of sufficient electrolytes in your system. Same as above, up the electrolytes and get your body back in balance.

3. Irregular heart rate. Before you go rushing to your cardiologist thinking downing a gallon of electrolytes will stave off heart palpitations, take a breath and chill. A lack of electrolytes can, again, throw off the balance of minerals in your body and cause your heart to flutter (or it could just be that certain someone too). So take more electrolytes.

4. You are tired and irritable a lot. This is a no brainer.  Lack of electrolytes can negatively impact brain function. 3 days without water and you can die. So don’t let that happen, drink electrolytes.

5. You have numbness or tingling in your limbs, fingers and toes.  Clearly, you can see a pattern here. Imbalance of minerals like potassium, sodium and magnesium can make you feel tingly and not in the right places.

These signs may alert you to a lack of electrolytes in your system. But there are also medical conditions  or products that can contribute to it as well.  High blood pressure, diarrhea, vomiting, substance abuse, steroids or diuretics can all contribute to a lack of electrolyte balance. The list goes on. . .so lets talk about what you can do to fix it.

“I never drink enough water.” “I hate the taste of water.” Blah, blah, blah.   Well good news, its ok not to like water. Or the taste of it. It’s easy to remedy this- just throw some tasty Seven Seas Electrolyte mix in to your water, shake and BOOM, you are on your way to proper fluid balance . In addition, maybe start eating foods rich in potassium, magnesium and calcium. All things your body needs anyway.

New Years resolutions don’t have to be difficult. It’s not rocket science. Drink some electrolytes everyday and you are good to go.  You don’t even have to think about it. What’s easier than that? At least one resolution is a no brainer. That “spend more time with family” one?  You might have to ease into that one.
